The twenty-eighth Exe Sails and Covers Starcross Steamer was held on Sunday February 25th . This was the second race of the three race South West Series and the seventh in the longer new 10 race Sailing Southwest series. The Steamer is getting more and more popular and the limit of 100 boats was reached within a week of the entries being open, over a month before the event.

The winning boat was a Merlin sailed by Jon Gorringe and Matt Currall with Chris Gould and Caroline Croft in another Merlin 2nd and Chris Hampe sailing an International Canoe in 3rd place.

Intrepid sailors were defeated by the conditions at our annual RNLI Pursuit Race on Sunday November 12th! Despite a forecast of strong winds a good number of sailors turned up to sail the annual fundraiser. At first it seemed as if the wind had moderated, but even so the Cat sailors showed their innate caution and none rigged. Foolhardy monohull racers did and the race officer started the race. As squally and gusty conditions continued (see video clip) some decided that discretion was the better part of valour and stayed on terra firma.

The 2017 SYC Topper Open took place on Sunday 15 October. Four races were sailed.

SYC Topper Open Prizewinners, 2017

SYC's annual Laser open meeting took place on Saturday 2nd September, included within the Laser Southwest Grand Prix series. Three races were sailed.

The 20th and 21st of May saw 21 Merlin Rockets racing at Starcross Yacht Club for the 2017 Exe Sails Silver Tiller.

Once greeted by club members, sailors had a briefing with PRO Russell Gibbs who informed everyone of the windward-leeward course for the 3 races of the day.

We were blessed with a fine day and moderate winds for the Jim Vallis Memorial Cruise on Saturday 6th August. It was really pleasing to welcome 10 members of Jim's family to the club. We started things off with coffee and cakes!
