The twenty-eighth Exe Sails and Covers Starcross Steamer was held on Sunday February 25th . This was the second race of the three race South West Series and the seventh in the longer new 10 race Sailing Southwest series. The Steamer is getting more and more popular and the limit of 100 boats was reached within a week of the entries being open, over a month before the event.

Vanishing Sail, a multi-award winning Caribbean documentary film, is to be shown at the Barn Cinema, Dartington Hall Estate, near Totnes, at 7:30 pm on Thursday 25 January for prompt 8 pm start. The organisers would be very pleased to see SYC members at this event. Please click for details and online ticket sales if interested.

The film is presented by Classic Boat, with an introduction by local filmmaker Peter Nicholson and a post-screening Q&A with producer Justin Sihera.

On the island of Carriacou in the West Indies, the last wooden sailboat builder dreams of saving a great tradition passed down the generations from Scottish settlers that sailed there centuries ago. The film follows Alywn Enoe’s journey of determination and resilience over three years, from hauling trees with his sons, to a final traditional launching ceremony. Stories of the old Caribbean - trading by sail and smuggling contraband interweave a tribute to the independent spirit of a small island community.

  • Over the last 25 years Peter Nicholson has directed, written & produced some fifty documentaries for prime-time UK network & international broadcast. He is a member of BAFTA and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
