Open Day - Try Sailing at SYC

SYC is taking part in the RYA's "Push The Boat Out" national event on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May. Throughout the day there will be sailing and a lunchtime BBQ. If you have come to this site to book your free" have-a-go" session or would simply like to see what we can offer, then please read on.

Push The Boat Out Poster If you are thinking about coming along to try sailing, then this is what you need to know:-

  • You need to book a place (see below) with one of our experienced helms.. Places are limited so we suggest you book early to avoid disappointment. If you can, then please come for the day to enjoy the atmosphere and the stunning location.
  • Be sure to arrive at least 45 minutes before the time you booked for your sailing session and then register in the clubhouse.
  • The club's galley will be open from 9:30 am. for drinks and snacks until mid day and there will be a barbecue from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.
  • Clothing
    • You may well get wet!  Hot showers are available so bring a towel as well as a change of clothes and shoes.
    • If you have a wetsuit or a drysuit then that would be ideal but not essential and if you have neither then bring some old clothes a windproof jacket, and soft shoes are best. (Synthetics are warmer than cotton if you get wet.)
    • We will provide you with a buoyancy aid so that you will feel totally safe.

Interested in giving sailing a try? Then click here to book a place.  Someone from Starcross Yacht Club will then get in contact to discuss the details and we look forward to seeing you.

If you have any questions contact:-

Nigel Howe on 07774 956188 or via email using this form.

Kit for Clubs Voucher Scheme

Read on for a great deal...

SYC has just signed up to AS Watersports 'Kit for Clubs Voucher Scheme' and here's how it works;  every time you shop in AS Watersports, as a Starcross club member, YOU get a discount on your purchase AND the club gets a voucher!  For every £10 you spend, you will be given a voucher and when you are next in the clubhouse, just drop them into the voucher box. The club saves up the vouchers and can redeem them to get free kit for the club.

Neat isn't it?

As well as kayaks, canoes and all conceivable kayak kit, AS Watersports stock sailing gear too.... Visit the shop at Haven Road, Exeter - parking is close by and coffee shops to hand. Tel: 01392 219600

Welcome to the Starcross Yacht Club web site

Starcross Yacht Club is reputed to be one of the oldest sailing clubs in the British Isles, having been loosely formed to organise a sailing regatta all the way back in 1772. However, it is now a thoroughly go-ahead, modern and informal family club devoted to the pursuit of small boat sailing.  Originally situated in Starcross village, since 1957 the club has been based at our present location at Powderham Point on the west bank of the Exe Estuary, where we have all the facilities expected by keen sailors. There are excellent changing rooms and showers, plus launching and berthing facilities for sailing dinghies and catamarans.

Working party - Sat 2nd May

A reminder, with the warmer weather approaching so does club working parties.  Next on the horizon is the Junior Group WP, Saturday 2nd May, start 10.00hrs.

A plant

Along with the usual beach/shingle clearing there will be a distinct gardening theme.  As many know we are hosting the Exe Regatta this year and one suggestion is let’s tidy up the site and add a few bushes and small plantings – it should be a real pleasing sight for visiting sailors.  So if you have a gardening interest and even more importantly offer some specimens it would be appreciated.

Whilst primarily aimed at parents the WP is open to all members and if you missed last March’s event come along.  The usual mid-morning coffee & donuts will be available all finished off with lunch, a great day meeting other members, talking sailing and enjoying the club surroundings.

Also a register of interest would be helpful for lunch numbers.

Many thanks,

P.S. If you've no idea what's involved in an SYC working party here's a few photos from a previous one.
