The Sailing Committee met via the medium of ZOOM on Tuesday 23rd to discuss a number of issues. Here is a quick summary of the meeting.

  • We intend to start sailing after the COVID lockdown relaxation on March 29th. There will be a slightly modified programme for April with three free sailing events, and the Easter Series and Spring Series for the racing members. Unfortunately organised dinghy cruising and the Evening Series will be cancelled for April. We hope that it will be possible to start the full programme in either May or June. The main restriction we have is being limited to family groups for the Safety Boat and OOD duties. We are assuming that as more people get vaccinated we will be able to widen the net for duty assignment. It would really help us get back to the full programme more quickly if you could post on the "duty groups" forum topic if you are willing to do duties in a family group, or have received at least one of he vaccination jabs and are willing to do duties with other vaccinated individuals.
  • The change of fleet structure for the Sunday club series events will be implemented for the Spring Series. The RS200 and RS Aero 9 classes will move from the slow handicap to te fast handicap fleet. This change will be reviewed at the end of the Spring Series. No change will be made to the fleets used for the Evening Series (i.e the RS200 and RS Aero 9 will remain in the slow handicap fleet for Wednesday evening races).
  • It is not yet clear whether we will be able to run the Exe Regatta, Merlin-Rocket open, or the Laser/Solo open, but planning will continue under the assumption that these events will be possible later in the season.
  • The Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for club sailing have been updated to reflect changes in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-24and will be published on the website soon. These instructions will apply to ALL club racing after we restart racing.

We also discussed a number of other topics junior sailing, a junior regatta during the school holidays, improving the course board and how to make pursuit races easier for OODs - but it is still early days on all these topics and I'll leave the details to future reports.
