Social Activities At SYC
SYC’s social calendar comprises a formal Dinner Dance and Prizegiving in February and two very informal supper parties in April and October. Some years we have a summer party as well, perhaps co-inciding with the club’s Open Day or as part of our hosting of the River Exe Regatta (we are hosts every fourth year).
The clubhouse has its own bar and we have a couple of large barbecues, and these are the focus of a number of ad hoc gatherings through the season. Junior nights in particular are likely to see a group of supportive parents watching their offspring’s adventures from the comfort of the bar area, and when the weather’s right (when is it not!) then Free Sailing sessions often include a fair amount of picnicking and the barbecue may well be deployed. The bar also opens when dinghy racing is in the late afternoon or evening.
SYC is a friendly club and various fleets also organise other events for themselves. The Cruiser fleet, for example, may support each other through the long dark winter by anchoring themselves in a local hostelry, whilst Dinghy Cruising is a very social activity in itself - there is often a need to linger in the beach cafes of Exmouth waiting for the tide to turn, fortifying oneself with tea, cakes and boaty banter.
