Inexperienced skippers of yachts and powerboats

Course outline
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers.  Topics covered include the basics of seamanship, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chartwork, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations, construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts.   By the end of the course you will have enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day and a basic knowledge of lights for returning home during dark hours. 

Duration
5 days or an equivalent number of sessions. This course is not usually delivered locally - see suggested online providers. The SYC Training Officer can advise on its suitability for your needs.
