SYC website upgraded

The Starcross Yacht Club website has been upgraded. If you are reading this, you are using the upgraded website!

Why?

The previous SYC website was getting very old - almost a decade old which is truly ancient in "internet years". More importantly, new security patches for the software it ran on would no longer be produced after August 2023 so it was time to move to new software.

What's new?

The main changes are related to the versions of software being used. Your logon from the previous site should still work. All the forum posts have been carried across to the new site. We had a good tidy up of all the old content / articles from the previous site but everything that was still relevant has been brought across to the new site.

However, we did take the opportunity to make some improvements as part of the work. That means there are changes and everyone hates change! Here's an incomplete list of what is going to annoy you the main changes

  • the previous site was very poor on a mobile phone or tablet. Our main aim for the new site was to make it much easier to use on mobiles. As part of that, we've made significant changes to the menu navigation. That means you won't be able to find stuff until you get used to the new site. Give it a week or so to get used to the changed menus before complaining!
  • we've got rid of the somewhat confusing concept on the previous site of a public home page and a logged in / members home page. There is now just one "home page" (albeit it does display content in slightly different ways if you are logged in)
  • we did more work on website content than we were initially expecting to! Have a look at all the entries under the new "Sailing" menu item and you will see a lot of new content for dinghy racing, dinghy cruising and yachting as well as an all new "Get on the water!" section.
There have also been significant rework of the Training and Juniors sections and changes to the "Content" section (which is the name for the area of the site that holds a lot of the reference material)
  • the website "Search" been improved from "terrible" to "not too bad actually" (but you still have to search the forum separately to the website). Give it a try sometime (it's in the top menu).

We do plan to continue with improvements to the website now it is on the upgraded software. When you've had a chance to get used to the new website, why not suggest some more improvements for it? Use the forum or the Contacts page to get in touch.

P.S. The current webcam problems aren't due to this website upgrade. They are much more of a "phone company" problem
P.P.S. If any of the upgraded website pages look odd to you, in true support desk style, I'd suggest you trying clearing your browser cache first
