Places are available, open to SYC members, on the three RYA courses listed below, with a further two courses to be organised soon. RYA (Royal Yachting Association) courses lead to nationally-recognised certification.
Please note, these three courses will run soon and you should not delay if you wish to participate! Please contact John Allen, SYC Training Officer, to book a place or ask for further information.
- There will be a one-day RYA First Aid course at SYC on Saturday 24 January, leading to a certificate valid for three years, at a cost of £40 to SYC members.
Administering first aid at sea or even just afloat is very different from doing so on land. Because of this, the RYA's First Aid course has been specifically developed for water users.
The total number of spaces on this course is limited by RYA rules - please act fast to be sure of a place. - An RYA VHF Short Range Course will be held on Saturday 21 February. The cost will be £50, plus exam fees of £76 payable directly to the RYA.
If you have a VHF radio onboard your boat, or even carry a handheld VHF whilst kayaking or paddle-boarding, you are legally required to hold the operator’s licence to which this qualification leads. - Lympstone Sailing Club is organising a face-to-face RYA Day Skipper Theory course, led by instructor Jim Carter from SYC, to be held at LSC over three weekends this January, February and March, and leading to an exam. There are two spaces only remaining, cost £400. Contact John Allen, who will connect you with Lympstone SC who are managing the course.
Planning is also underway for RYA Powerboat Level 2 and RYA Safety Boat courses, to be held soon. Once again, please express interest to John, who will answer any questions.
