SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE - VHF/DSC MARINE RADIO

(CLASSROOM) DURATION: 10 hours (inc 3 hours home study)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Phonetic Alphabet knowledge, passport-sized photo and 3 hours home study from the handbook provided.

ABILITY AT COURSE END: Certificate holder is authorised to use a marine VHF radio with digital selective calling onboard a British vessel fitted with radio equipment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: RYA Short Range Certificate marine radio course will authorise the holder to use a marine VHF radio with digital selective calling onboard a British vessel fitted with radio equipment. The course will cover issuing and responding to Mayday alerts as well as other vital information to help keep you safe afloat. A ten hour course including three hours home study prior to the course using the handbook included and provided at the time of booking your course. The course will be taught and examined using radio simulators. The final exam (required for licence) must be taken at Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre, which includes a short written test, a practical assessment and is run by a separate assessor.

Course topics include: the basics of radio operation, the correct frequencies (channels) to be used, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures , making ship to shore communication, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators , Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) , Emergency Position Indicating Radio, Beacons (EPIRB) , Search and Rescue (SART)
