Old sails for a project. was created by Max
Hi all,

As above, I am looking for some old canvas for a project and was wondering if anyone knows of any or has some available?

I saw there was a upcycle service with a drop off point in Topsham, but it appears that this is no longer in operation.

Many thanks,

M

Hi Max

Are you looking for "canvas" or "sail cloth" - they are rather different materials. I have some old dacron jibs that you can have - if that's any good. How much do you need?

regards

Mark

Hey Mark,
Thanks for replying! I have a few ideas in mind, and a sailmaker friend who has offered his help on the sewing side of things.
However, I would not want to use anything that is remotely serviceable in its current form, so would not like to use anything that may be of use to someone as a sail.
Dacron would fit the bill, I am sure.
May I ask what size they are as the bigger the better...

Gratefully,
Max.

I have a Merlin jib as well. 2.8 sq. metres, roughly 4m tall.

I have at least two Merlin dacron jibs  - similar size to Robin's.  I also have a mylar (grey - transparent) mainsail which is about 10 sq m

Interesting this has come up as conversation as we've (Amelie -junior) emailed the club to ask if SYC could become a named drop off point for old sail and wetsuits. Amelie is now a Uk Clean Sailors Ambassador and wanted to do this at our club amongst other plans she has for sustainability purposes. Apparently the ideas are going to be discussed at the committee in April...remind them if it doesn't. If anyone does have old sails in the mean time, that are not needed for art projects, please let us know as Amelie is willing to collect them and take them to where they can be recycled/repurposed.
Thanks
Freya and Amélie

Hi Mark,
The 10m square mylar one sounds quite useful, and I would be grateful to you if I could use it if it is no longer serviceable to you.
Would it be easier for me to pick up or would you be happy taking it to the club?

Thank you also, to everyones replies and offers. Hopefully Ame'lie and Freya can get the clean sailors initiative set up and running for SYC.

Kind regards,

Max

Hi Max
A merlin sailor contacted me about the mainsail - so that is now going to be used.
I can bring the jibs to the club if you are interested.

Hi Freya and Amélie
Where do you want me to drop the jibs off for recycling.
Do you need the luff wires removing - I assume they are recycled separately.

I also have old spinnakers if they are of any use.

Hi Max,

I have three old sails which came with my 26ft yacht when I bought it. Would you like them? Also I’ve some odd bits of sailcloth as well.

These are Dacron type ie man-made material, not canvas.

Just let me know if you can use them. Otherwise they are going to the tip fairly soon.

Regards,

Chris

Also I have a spinnaker from a Mirror dinghy, lovely bright red in colour, if you are interested.

Hi Chris,
They sound ideal. Yes please!
Would you like me to pick them up?
I will be at the club this Sunday afternoon if you would rather drop them there. I live 5 mins away so can be very flexible regarding timings.
Kindest regards,
Max

Hey Chris, please don't go out of your way, if you would like to drop me a message when you are heading there next then I am sure I can free myself up. Alternatively, I am more than happy to pick them up.
I tried to private message you but couldn't find how to!
