My apologies for hijacking the SYC website to promote one of my hobbies.
Mary and I have been volunteering on the Brixham Trawler - "Pilgrim" for the past two years or so . Initially working in the maintenance team we helped fix some of the inevitable wear and tear in the thousands of pieces of wood that are held together together only with fastenings (no glue, no epoxy), with just cotton calking to keep the water out. We also trained to become crew to support the sailing programme. Imagine a Merlin Rocket with two masts, eight sails and every single rope the same colour !. At 29m long, 12m wide and about 90 tonnes it is an amazing experience hammering downwind with a "a bone in her teeth" (fun fact: she weighs a lot more than all of the dinghies in the SYC boat park combined).
Anyhoo the charitable trust that runs Pilgrim is looking for for new members. Everybody is welcome, particularly if you have with an interest in heritage, traditional sailing, boat maintenance, carpentry, organising social events, raising money .. .and even shanty singing/shouting. You don't need to be an expert, there are lots of people involved who are very knowledgeable and who guide the activities. If you are interested check out the website. I'd be happy to tell you more about it - you can most often find me at the club next to Merlin Rocket 3797.
