Hi Mark

I was given an NSC yesterday which may be incorrect.

The course  was 31red (P) church (S) 31 green (S) 25 (S) and 29 (S)

I sailed the wrong way round Church on lap 1 but the correct way round on the next 2 laps. So i think lap2 unwinds me and lap 3 then send me round the corerct way for the first time and therefore i think i completed 1 lap legally  in 42 mins and about 2 seconds? (was lapping the solos at that point)

I would of course have been last but with 22pt and not 24pts if my intrepretation of unwinding yourself is correct (havent got a rule book to hand to know whether this needs to be done in a timely manner like penalty turns)

Not fussed as to whether results are changed .

Interestingly if the rounding of Church was by choice !!! (port or startboard) i think we would have won by 37 seconds based on our 3 lap time. !!!

Will remember the course next time .

Sorry you sailed the wrong course on the first lap and he didn’t go back on the first lap and sell the correct rate around the Mark so unfortunately you’re out

Not sure that is correct?

The RRS have two sections on the course.

Definitions
Sail the Course
A boat sails the course when (a) she starts; (b) (c) a string representing her track until she finishes, when drawn taut, (1) passes each mark of the course for the race on the required side and in the correct order (including the starting marks), (2) (3) touches each mark designated in the sailing instructions to be a rounding mark, and passes between the marks of a gate from the direction of the course from the previous mark; and then she finishes. A mark that does not begin, bound or end the leg the boat is sailing does not have a required side.

SAILING THE COURSE A boat shall sail the course. A boat may correct any errors in sailing the course, provided she has not finished.

So in my view there is no requirement on when i correct my errors and over what time (given average laps are an option) and where i sail after the error is irrelevant? . Having gone round church to port on "theoretical lap one" and then to starbourd on "theoretical lap 2) i have at that point unwound the error and so are in effect on the leg between 31 red and Chrurch for the first time. When i came past the 3rd time (passing church to starboard) i am in effect now back on lap one and taking the marks there after in the prescribed order. So in my view i am entitled to a 1 lap average time unless you know of a rule that says otherwise?

As i say it wont affect the actual results but i guess the 2 pt difference could affect the series results? Not particularly fussed as to whether the results are changed or not but it is interesting as a point of principal and of course is only really relevant to average lap handicap racing.

Hi Ralph

Interesting one.  Being a nerd I checked the RRS cases and I couldn't find any situation that matches what happened to you yesterday.  There was one which dealt with a person rounding the last buoy the wrong way, then finishing and returning to unwind themselves and finish correctly - that was allowed.

So as it played out in the race - the OOD noticed you rounding CH the wrong way on lap 1  and scored you NCS .  I don't think we can ask an OOD to check if anyone rounding a buoy the wrong way, then unwinds themself correctly.  So the way forward for you if you want to get a finish is to request redress and provide evidence of correctly unwinding. (bring a piece of string and a witness !)

Thanks Mark. Agreed re RO actions and not worth the hassle re redress . Probably should have challenged it when i saw results on board. It was not until i got home and thought about it that i felt that i had at least done one legal lap !!!
